DESCRIPTION

This book provides a comprehensive overview of nucleophilic aromatic substitutions, focusing on the mechanistic and synthetic features that govern these reactions.

The first chapter presents a detailed mechanistic analysis of the factors determining the feasibility of SNAr substitutions, providing decisive information to predict regioselectivity of many reactions and to define the conditions for concerted SNAr processes. Reflecting the key role played by these species as intermediates in most SNAr reactions, chapter 2 then discusses the chemistry of anionic sigma-complexes. Chapter 3 describes the concept of superelectrophilicity in SNAr substitutions, as it has recently emerged from the reactivity of strongly electron-deficient aromatic and heteroaromatic structures. The numerous synthetic applications are considered in depth in the chapters 4 and 5 that follow on intermolecular and intramolecular nucleophilic aromatic substitutions. Then, chapter 6 focuses on substitutions proceeding formally through displacement of a hydride ion, a hot topic in the field. The final chapter brings together concise yet comprehensive discussions surrounding SNAr photosubstitutions, radical substitutions, and ANRORC substitutions.

Authored by a highly respected chemist who has contributed greatly to the field over the past two decades, this is a valuable information source for all organic chemists working in academia or the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries.

Asymmetric synthesis has become a major aspect of modern organic chemistry. The stereo chemical properties of an organic compound are often essential to its bioactivity, and the need for stereo chemically pure pharmaceutical products is a key example of the importance of stereo chemical control in organic synthesis. However, achieving high levels of stereo selectivity in the synthesis of complex natural products represents a considerable intellectual and practical challenge for chemists.

Written from a synthetic organic chemistry perspective, this text provides a practical overview of the field, illustrating a wide range of transformations that can be achieved. The book captures the latest advances in asymmetric catalysis with emphasis placed on non-enzymatic methods.

    Topics covered include:

    • Reduction of alkenes, ketones and imines
    • Nucleophilic addition to carbonyl compounds
    • Catalytic carbon-carbon bond forming reactions

One approach to organic synthesis is retrosynthetic analysis. With this approach a chemist will start with the structure of their target molecule and progressively cut bonds to create simpler molecules. Reversing this process gives a synthetic route to the target molecule from simpler starting materials. This “disconnection” approach to synthesis is now a fundamental part of every organic synthesis course.

Organic Synthesis: The Disconnection Approach, 2nd Edition introduces this important technique, to help students to design their own organic syntheses. There are forty chapters: those on the synthesis of given types of molecules alternate with strategy chapters in which the methods just learnt are placed in a wider context. The synthesis chapters cover many ways of making each type of molecule starting with simple aromatic and aliphatic compounds with one functional group and progressing to molecules with many functional groups. The strategy chapters cover questions of selectivity, protection, stereochemistry, and develop more advanced thinking via reagents specifically designed for difficult problems.

Examples are drawn from pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, natural products, pheromones, perfumery and flavouring compounds, dyestuffs, monomers, and intermediates used in more advanced synthetic work. Reasons for wishing to synthesise each compound are given

This second edition has been fully revised and updated with a modern look. Recent examples and techniques are included and illustrated additional material has been added to take the student to the level required by the sequel, “Organic Synthesis: Strategy and Control

Several chapters contain extensive new material based on courses that the authors give to chemists in the pharmaceutical industry

This English edition of a best-selling and award-winning German textbook Organic Mechanisms Reactions, Stereochemistry and Synthesis is aimed at those who desire to learn organic chemistry through an approach that is facile to understand and easily committed to memory. Michael Harmata, Norman Rabjohn Distinguished Professor of Organic Chemistry (University of Missouri) surveyed the accuracy of the translation, made certain contributions, and above all adapted its rationalizations to those prevalent in the organic chemistry community in the English-speaking world.

Throughout the book fundamental and advanced reaction mechanisms are presented with meticulous precision. The systematic use of red "electron-pushing arrows" allows students to follow each transformation elementary step by elementary step. Mechanisms are not only presented in the traditional contexts of rate laws and substituent effects but, whenever possible, are illustrated using practical, useful and state-of-the-art reactions. The abundance of stereoselective reactions included in the treatise makes the reader familiar with key concepts of stereochemistry.

    From the reviews:

"Professor Bruckner has further refined his already masterful synthetic organic chemistry classic; the additions are seamless and the text retains the magnificent clarity, rigour and precision which were the hallmark of previous editions. The strength of the book stems from Professor Bruckner’s ability to provide lucid explanations based on a deep understanding of physical organic chemistry and to limit discussion to very carefully selected reaction classes illuminated by exquisitely pertinent examples, often from the recent literature. The panoply of organic synthesis is analysed and dissected according to fundamental structural, orbital, kinetic and thermodynamic principles with an effortless coherence that yields great insight and never over-simplifies. The perfect source text for advanced Undergraduate and Masters/PhD students who want to understand, in depth, the art of synthesis ."

First published over 40 years ago Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds was the first text on the identification of organic compounds using spectroscopy. This text is now considered to be a classic. The key strength of this text is the extensive set of real-data problems (in Chapters 7 and 8). Even professional chemists use these spectra as reference data. Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds is written by and for organic chemists, and emphasizes the synergistic effect resulting from the interplay of the spectra.  This book is characterized by its problem-solving approach with extensive reference charts and tables.

The development of more effective routes to known materials and the production of new materials are important goals in many areas, including electronics, agriculture, medicine and textiles. organic synthesis is central to achieving these goals. Comprehensive Organic Synthesis draws together the common themes that underlie the many apparently disparate areas of organic chemistry which underpin synthetic strategies, thus providing a comprehensive overview of this important discipline.

the contributions have been organized to reflect the way in which synthetic chemists approach a problem. in terms of organic molecules, the work is divided into formation of carbon-carbon bonds, introduction of heteroatoms and heteroatom interconversions. thus, volumes 1-5 focus on carbon-carbon formation, but also include aspects of heteroatom introduction. volumes 6-8 concentrate on interconversion of heteroatoms, but also deal with exchange of carbon-carbon bonds for carbon-heteroatom bonds. organization of the chapters is along the theme of selectivity, which is a critical question in determining the suitability of a synthetic method. volume 9 contains cumulative author and subject indexes.

comprehensive organic synthesis will appeal to a wide audience. the set will be an essential reference work for all those seeking information on the solution of synthetic problems, whether they be experienced practitioners or chemists whose major interests lie outside organic synthesis. in addition, synthetic chemists requiring the essential facts in new areas, as well as students completely new to the field, will find comprehensive organic synthesis an invaluable source, providing authoritative accounts of the essential facts and concepts.

Organic Stereochemistry: Guiding Principles and Biomedicinal Relevance Bernard Testa (Editor), John Caldwell (Editor), M. Volkan Kisakurek (Editor) 400 pages April 2014 Description :

“This book should become an indispensable asset on the bookshelves of pharmaceutical laboratories in academia and in industry, as well as of laboratories devoted to plant protection. I am convinced that studying this book will be an eye-opener for many scientists in the field of life sciences. Furthermore, for teachers in this area it will not only be a useful compilation of the various languages and definitions of organic stereochemistry, but also a welcome source of examples for demonstrating to their students the intricate and intriguing role stereochemistry plays in the chemistry of life.” –Prof. Dr. Dieter Seebach, Laboratory of Organic Chemistry, ETH Zurich, Switzerland

This textbook presents the molecular scale of matter in the broad diversity and richness of its three dimensions, giving due attention when relevant to the temporal dimension in which molecules exist, act, and react.

The focus is on two significant fields of three-dimensional chemistry: a presentation of the guiding principles in organic stereochemistry, followed by a focus on the biochemical and medicinal relevance of this discipline.

The treatment of Guiding Principles gives priority to didactic clarity and nomenclature issues, as detailed and illustrated in Parts 1 to 4:

    • Symmetry Elements and Operations, Classification of Stereoisomers
    • Stereoisomerism Resulting from One or Several Stereogenic Centers
    • Other Stereogenic Elements: Axes of Chirality, Planes of Chirality, Helicity, and (E,Z)-Diastereoisomerism
    • Isomerisms about Single Bonds and in Cyclic Systems

This is followed by Parts 5 to 8 which focus on the biomedicinal relevance of stereochemistry, with special reference to the biochemistry and pharmacology of medicinal compounds.

Here, examples and applications are discussed and illustrated based on their relevance to a given specific stereochemical aspect:

    • Chirality in Molecular and Clinical Pharmacology
    • The Conformational Factor in Molecular Pharmacology
    • The Concept of Substrate Stereoselectivity in Biochemistry and Xenobiotic Metabolism
    • Prostereoisomerism and the Concept of Product Stereoselectivity in Xenobiotic Metabolism

Finally, the book contains a gift for broad-minded readers with an interest in the historical roots of stereochemistry:

    • Part 9: ‘Molecular Chirality in Chemistry and Biology: Historical Milestones’

    Key features:

    • Consists entirely of beautifully produced colored figures
    • Includes marginal notes, giving clear-cut short definitions of terms used in the corresponding caption
    • Provides an alphabetic glossary of terms
    • Offers an extensive index

Reactive Intermediates in Organic Chemistry: Structure, Mechanism, and Reactions Maya Shankar Singh 296 pages March 2014

    Description
    :
Most reactions in organic chemistry do not proceed in a single step but rather take several steps to yield the desired product. In the course of these multi-step reaction sequences, short-lived intermediates can be generated that quickly convert into other intermediates, reactants, products or side products. As these intermediates are highly reactive, they cannot usually be isolated, but their existence and structure can be proved by theoretical and experimental methods. Using the information obtained, researchers can better understand the underlying reaction mechanism of a certain organic transformation and thus develop novel strategies for efficient organic synthesis.

The chapters are clearly structured and are arranged according to the type of intermediate, providing information on the formation, characterization, stereochemistry, stability, and reactivity of the intermediates. Additionally, representative examples and a problem section with different levels of difficulty are included for self-testing the newly acquired knowledge.

By providing a deeper understanding of the underlying concepts, this is a musthave reference for PhD and Master Students in organic chemistry, as well as a valuable source of information for chemists in academia and industry working in the field. It is also ideal as primary or supplementary reading for courses on organic chemistry, physical organic chemistry or analytical chemistry.
