Traditional Herbal Medicine Research Methods: Identification, Analysis, Bioassay, and Pharmaceutical

By Willow J.H. Liu Hardcover488 pages collection and identification of herbal materials, extraction and isolation of compounds from herbs, in vitro bioassay, in vivo animal test, toxicology, and clinical trials of herbal research. To fully understand and make the best use of herbal medicines requires the close combination of chemistry, biochemistry, biology, pharmacology, and clinical science. Although there are many books about traditional medicines research, they mostly focus on either chemical or pharmacological study results of certain plants. This book, however, covers the systematic study and analysis of herbal medicines in general – including chemical isolation and identification, bioassay and mechanism study, pharmacological experiment, and quality control of the raw plant material and end products.

Testing of medicinal herbs and their derivatives like extracts, phytochemicals, oleoresins etc has all along been a difficult and controversial subject due to the complex nature of the active constituents of the medicinal herbs found wild or cultivated in various regions of the world. An effort is done in book Standardization of Botanicals to include, at least some testing methods, in various pharmacopoeias but there is still a wide gap between the medicinal herbs and their testing methods. This book containing 25 monographs of medicinal herbs fills that gap in knowledge base with detailed, ready to use and validated extraction processes and methods of testing to be performed in a well-equipped testing laboratory.

Volume I with 25 monographs was published in 2002 which was perhaps one of the very few books providing specifications and testing methods for various types of herbal extracts like soft extracts, dry extracts and phytochemicals. Most of the data provided was based on the hands-on experience of the author Dr. V. Rajpal who has been constantly associated with the testing as well as processing of medicinal herbs and their derivatives since 1976 in an industrial setting. His experience of providing consultancy for setting up herb processing and testing laboratories led to his in-depth knowledge of problems faced by the herb processing factories and quality control laboratories.

Since 2002 Dr. V. Rajpal had been working on 25 other commonly used medicinal herbs in India as well as other countries. He has collected all the data with latest national and international references to make the all-new 25 monographs complete and up-to-date.

There has been a resurgence in usage of herbal medicine in the past few years, not only among the traditional medicine users (ethno-medicine) but also among the modern consumers of herbal products. This is supplemented with all round growth of similar natural products among the nutritional supplements and personal care segments. The question of quality therefore acquires greater importance today than ever before. While there are some books available on identification, description, pharmacological action, safety aspects etc. of medicinal herbs, very few books can be found on quantitative testing of medicinal herbs.

Standardization of Botanicals fulfills that gap in knowledge base with detailed, ready to use and validated methods of analysis to be perfomed in a quality control laboratory. This book will be welcomed by all those who are concerned about the standardization of botanicals as it provides analytical procedures for extracts as well as phytochemicals.

This book is an attempt to provide, not only the quantitative testing methods but also chemical constituents, extraction processes, specifications of various extracts, therapeutic functions, dosage, pharmacological properties, toxicity/safety aspects and references. Volume I of this book contains 25 widely used medicinal herbs.

About the author:

Dr. Rajpal obtained his doctorate in phytochemistry in 1976 and since then has been associated with the herb processing and testing of botanicals, their extracts and phytochemicals in an industrial setting. He also provides consultancy services to various companies in this sector. He is presently working as a Technical Director with a company engaged in extraction of botanical.

The skyrocketing cost of research for therapeutic molecules from purely synthetic chemistry, has prompted the resurgence of interest in traditional herbal medicine. While clinical usage of such herbs has been extensively documented in ancient texts, exhaustive plant profiles are lacking for most plants, especially with regard to phytochemicals and their biosynthetic pathways. This shortage of information, coupled with increasing information demands of modern validation procedures of manufacturers of herbal medicinal products and the demand of increasingly well-informed regulatory authorities worldwide, is putting increasing pressure on scientists and technologists to come up with such information. In addition, researchers involved with ethno botanical bioprospecting, from the pharmaceutical industry and academic research institutes are also on the lookout for such information. Towards that end, this book Glossary of Phytochemicals has been compiled to contribute to such a knowledgebase where concise and practical information has been provided on about 1,300 phytochemicals from 850 medicinal plants, most of them being of Indian origin. The unique feature of this book is that to keep it manageable, the coverage has been restricted to those phytochemicals that show promise as a future therapeutic molecule, based on extensive experience of the editor as MD alternative medicine. Information provided on each phytochemical includes, generic name, chemical class, molecular weight and formula, melting point, boiling point, physical form, solubility, CAS number, biological source, biological action and chemical structure with stereochemistry.
